Tim,

First off, many thanks for writing an excellent article on the (possible) future of the Windows client.

I don't know if my history is as rich or varied as yours; I've been through the DOS days, almost since the beginning. I went through my Pascal phase before discovering C, and then C++. I achieved some level of expertise with MFC before jumping to the world of .NET. (Personally, I *never* want to go back to C++).

I consider COM to be something best left unmentioned, but that may have to do with being involved with an unfortunate project that was COM heavy (you know the type, use every design pattern imaginable, regardless of suitability for task at hand...).

I like to think that I'm not particularly a techno-dinosaur. Maybe getting older leads to techno-rigidity, but it could also lead to some form of meta-techno-wisdom.

I'm somewhat troubled by WPF, and I can't quite pin down why. On the one hand, WPF and XAML are cool, and I can do things with it that were extremely difficult in previous technologies.

And, yet, something doesn't quite sit right with me. As I mentioned earlier, perhaps it is just techno-senility settling in. I want to achieve the same level of WPF expertise that I had with MFC, but the desire isn't there, given that there may be emergent trends and technologies which will moot or greatly reduce the importance of the windows client.

See, the world changed in more than just the obvious ways with the emergence of the Internet and WWW (I don't want to preach at you, since you've probably got way more insight than I do, but I need to state some things for my case).

Back in the days of yore, the PC was a second-class citizen behind the mainframe, and then behind the UNIX-class workstation. Lots of promise, but still a great distance to go before it could be considered a peer (let alone a superior) of the mainframe/workstation.

But, there was excitement with the new platform. There was challenge. Victory was not at all certain, but the youth of that era (thats you and me) committed to the immature PC platform and drove it forward.

And we won. We made lots of mistakes along the way (DLL hell being just one), but mainframes have been put in their place, UNIX workstations are rare and endangered species.

Now, the PC is the mainframe of the current epoch. It is struggling somewhat to retain its relevancy in a world of iPhones and netbooks.

Despite all of the benefits you outline in your article, the PC (and Windows) is struggling, or at least showing the signs of beginning to struggle. Why?

The Internet and RIAs and RWAs are all the rage these days. Its those irrational, non-technological issues that you refer to that end up driving the trends.

And there's that same familiar sense of excitement and challenge in the web technologies that was present at the birth and adolescence of the PC platform.

The web technologies *are* inferior to the Windows Client technologies, just like the PC/DOS/early Windows were inferior to mainframes and workstations.

Yet look what happened. The PC/Windows succeeded. Isn't it just as probable that the inferior web technologies will succeed in a similar way, because today's youth doesn't know that the web is an inferior platform?

I find myself beginning to succumb to the energy and challenge that is the web. It seems to hold more interest for me (and perhaps more promise) than WPF. After all, WPF borrows strongly from web technologies. Perhaps it tries to overcome the perceived weaknesses a little too much, and in doing so becomes excessively complex?

Just look at SumoPaint (http://www.sumopaint.com/web/) or Aviary (http://aviary.com/home), and tell me that they aren't cool. More important, tell me that we're not seeing an emerging trend: what was once considered the domain of the PC platform is now emerging on the web, and it doesn't especially suck.

I'm going to continue on with some level of interest in WPF, but I've got to tell you that I feel more kinship with the web underdog.
